About This Calculator

This free leak rate calculator helps HVAC professionals, facility managers, and refrigeration technicians determine if their equipment complies with EPA 40 CFR Part 84 Subpart C regulations. Starting January 1, 2026, any facility with equipment containing 15 pounds or more of refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) greater than 53 must calculate leak rates every time refrigerant is added.

Understanding the New Thresholds

The EPA has established different leak rate thresholds based on equipment type:

  • Commercial Refrigeration: 20% annual leak rate (supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants)
  • Industrial Process Refrigeration: 30% annual leak rate (manufacturing facilities, chemical plants)
  • Comfort Cooling, Transport, and Other: 10% annual leak rate (office buildings, warehouses, refrigerated trucks)

When to Calculate

You must calculate the leak rate every time refrigerant is added to an appliance, with only three exceptions:

  • Immediately following a system retrofit
  • Installation of a new refrigerant-containing appliance
  • Seasonal variance adjustments

What Refrigerants Are Covered?

This calculator applies to HFC refrigerants with a GWP greater than 53, including:

  • R-134a (GWP 1,430) - Common in automotive AC and commercial refrigeration
  • R-404A (GWP 3,922) - Common in supermarket refrigeration and cold storage
  • R-410A (GWP 2,088) - Common in residential and commercial air conditioning
  • R-407C (GWP 1,774) - Common in commercial HVAC systems
  • R-448A (GWP 1,386) - Common retrofit replacement for R-404A
  • R-449A (GWP 1,396) - Common retrofit replacement for R-404A
